{"id":316,"date":"2021-10-14T14:00:14","date_gmt":"2021-10-14T18:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/missionoutlook.xaverians.org\/?p=316"},"modified":"2021-10-14T14:00:57","modified_gmt":"2021-10-14T18:00:57","slug":"poverty-and-income-in-the-u-s-a-new-census-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/missionoutlook.xaverians.org\/index.php\/2021\/10\/14\/poverty-and-income-in-the-u-s-a-new-census-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Poverty and Income in the U.S. &#8211; A New Census Report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/pietro-rossini\/embed\/episodes\/Poverty-and-Income-in-the-U-S----A-New-Census-Report-e18plkj\/a-a6mvj7o\" height=\"200px\" width=\"400px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">For the first time after five consecutive years, there is an increase in poverty in the U.S., according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/data\/tables\/2021\/demo\/income-poverty\/p60-273.html\"> latest Income and Poverty Report<\/a> released in September 2021 by the U.S. Census Bureau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are more than 3.3 million people in the U.S. that are struggling to make ends meet, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are much more people struggling with homelessness now than before the pandemic,\u201d said Lisa Trusas, recovery coach and warmer shelter manager in Milford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trusas said that there are several people living in storage units and that they are \u201cthe lucky ones. It\u2019s not,\u201d said Trusas. \u201cSometimes it takes years to get housing. Some are young couples and don\u2019t want to be separated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People that are not wrestling with homelessness or poverty can be totally unaware of the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople are shocked when they hear that there are homeless people living in their towns,\u201d said Trusas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trusas highlights another disparity, \u201cWhile single mothers can stay in a family shelter with their kids, that\u2019s not possible for single fathers,\u201d said Trusas. \u201cMost often, we don\u2019t know how to help these fathers with their children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poverty among males increased from 9.4% in 2019 to 10.2% in 2020, while the poverty rate among females increased from 11.5% to 12.6%, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inequality between races also still persists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The black population still registered the highest levels of poverty, although did not suffer significant changes between 2019 and 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the Asian poverty rate (8.1%) is not statistically different from 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pandemic affected non-Hispanic Whites as well causing an unprecedented poverty rate increase from to 8.2%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hispanic population documented the highest poverty rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hispanic poverty rate increased to 17%, around two percentage points higher than in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another important factor that the report takes into account is age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While poverty among people aged over 65 was not statistically different from 2019, the one registered among people aged from 18 to 64 increased to 10.4% from 9.4%, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"461\" src=\"https:\/\/missionoutlook.xaverians.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20210930_111718-2-1024x461.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/missionoutlook.xaverians.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20210930_111718-2-1024x461.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/missionoutlook.xaverians.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20210930_111718-2-300x135.jpg 300w, https:\/\/missionoutlook.xaverians.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20210930_111718-2-768x346.jpg 768w, https:\/\/missionoutlook.xaverians.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20210930_111718-2-1536x692.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/missionoutlook.xaverians.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20210930_111718-2-830x374.jpg 830w, https:\/\/missionoutlook.xaverians.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20210930_111718-2-230x104.jpg 230w, https:\/\/missionoutlook.xaverians.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20210930_111718-2-350x158.jpg 350w, https:\/\/missionoutlook.xaverians.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20210930_111718-2-480x216.jpg 480w, https:\/\/missionoutlook.xaverians.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/20210930_111718-2.jpg 2041w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>Homeless people in Framingham (MA) getting clothing donations from Our Lady of Fatima Shrine in Holliston (MA) \/\/ PHOTO &#8211; \u00a9 PIETRO ROSSINI, 2021<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The poverty rate for people aged under 18 increased to 16.1% from 14.4%, said the report. That\u2019s almost two percentage points higher than what was reported in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/14\/business\/economy\/census-income-poverty-health-insurance.html\">In a recent New York Times article<\/a>, Ben Casselman and Jeanna Smialek, analyzing the Census report, said that more people would be affected by the pandemic without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/american-rescue-plan\/\">The COVID-19 relief plan<\/a> made by the Biden administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 12,000 people would be living on the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 3.3 million people would live in poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/pietro-rossini\/embed\/episodes\/Poverty-and-Income-in-the-U-S----A-New-Census-Report-e18plkj\/a-a6mvj7o\" height=\"200px\" width=\"400px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time after five consecutive years, there is an increase in poverty in the U.S., according to the latest Income and Poverty Report released in September 2021 by the U.S. Census Bureau.
